I am a former Flight Options pilot and was present for the merger between Flight Options and Raytheon Travel Air. Neither pilot group had a union on property at the time. When it came time to merge our pilot seniority list we put together an equal group of pilots from both sides. They worked hard and came up three different methods of merging our seniority list. We then put all three of those methods up for a vote to the entire pilot group. One method won by a large margin so we used that method to integrate our list.
After the merger Raytheon took control of the new company and I woke up one morning to a message on my blackberry that essentially said “Oh by the way, here is your new seniority list”.
There was no asking us if we wanted a new list, no discussions of how it was derived, just here it is. The blatant disregard for our quality of life, careers and basic dignity as human beings was appalling.
That moment I knew we needed a union on property to protect us and I along with several other pilots from both companies got together and began the process of organizing. The frivolous changes to our lives and operations continued until we voted to have IBT 1108 represent us.
